Writing today we will go over how to write the solution part to our narrative.

Review of our story so far!

The Enormous Talo

Once upon a time there lived an old man and an old lady in a state house in Otara on Flat Bush Road.  Their house was surrounded by a beautiful talo garden.

“What big talo you grow!” admired the old man’s neighbours.

“Thank you, I water my talo every night and put my grass clippings on top of them!’ said the old man. 

The old man worked very hard every day, as his gym is his garden.  His hands are wrinkly filled with dirt.  He wears a hat on his head to keep his head nice and cool.

Every morning his wife would make him a cuppa tea and take it out to him in the garden.

The night before Christmas the old man tried to pull out the talo.  However it was too big.  

“Tug, tug, tug went the old man, I need some help!”  said the old man.

The resolution is where the action takes place in a story.  It is the exciting part of a movie.  You want to move your audience.  Your events in the story must be in logical order so the audience doesn't get confused.  

Let's try writing one together.  We have our plan.  Now let's build up our resolution sentence by sentence.

During Diwali most people that are celebrating usually light fireworks. Remember you need to know how to be safe around fire works. Watch the video below and try to see if you can write down 4 things you can do to keep you and your whanau safe during Diwali and Guy fawkes.

Malo ni Room 8! - Hello Room 8! I hope you are all well. 

This week is Tokelauan Language week. Here are a few greetings in Tokelauan that you can practice with your family.

One of my favourite stories from Tokelau is called ‘The safe place’. Listen to the story and answer the following questions below:

1:  Why do you think the hen couldn't be safe under the coconut tree?

2:  Who lived on Fenuafala?

3:  Where else do you think would be a good place for the hen to lay her eggs? 

4:  Who was she safe from?

5: Where else do you think could be a safe place for the hen?

6: Draw a picture and write a sentence where you think this safe place would be.

Designing your own stamp. These are stamps that represent Tokelau. They are pictures of coconuts, fish, breadfruit and Taro. Can you design your own picture of your own stamp? Try to watch the video below from Tokelau and see if you can find something you think might make a good design for a Tokelauan stamp.

Calming activity for the day. Breathing. Find somewhere quiet to sit and close your eyes. Imagine you are sitting on the beach in Tokelau. Take 5 deep breathes in and blow out slowly.  What can you hear? Imagine you can hear the waves splashing on the beach. Take another 5 deep breathes in and blow out slowly.

This is one of my ancestors on my home island of Niutao.  It is a gift that is only used on very dry seasons to save the people of Niutao.

This is Tepaaki she is the storyteller of this story, it is her family that holds this knowledge.

Today we are learning about the moon festival. The moon festival is a chinese tradition and this year it starts on Tuesday and usually last for 3-7 days.  We are going to listen to the story and find out what the legend of the moon festival is about. 

See if you can answer some of these questions from the story:

1: How many suns were there?

2:Why did Hao Yi shoot down the suns?

3: What is an elixir?

4: Who tried to steal the elixir?

5:Why did Chang'e take the elixir?

6:Why did Hao Yi make moon cakes?

Today we learnt how to make paper lanterns. Here is a video clip if you missed out on the lesson. Chris and Jeremiah helped write the instructions below:

How to make a lantern.

Step1: Fold the paper in half, long ways.

Step2: Draw a picture on the paper.

Step 3: Measure some lines and cut from the centre half down to near the end- not right off.

Step 4: Open it up, and tape it together on the side.

Step 5: Put the handle on the top of the lantern.

Maheu Papau Dad is my Toanga.  He has passed away now.  I treasure the values that he has taught me.  The taonga that my dad is wearing in this photo, I designed for him to celebrate his first parish.  I asked my brother's friend to carve it out of bone.  It means he is a fisher of men!

Listen to the story- Sina and the Eel below and answer the following questions:

Story time for today!  My own children have a few fears about being in Lockdown and going back to school.  This is a really good story on how to overcome some of these butterflies in your your tummy!

How does Aroha overcome the butterflies in her tummy?

Take a photo of a part of your garden that you like to go and sit to enjoy the wind in your hair, the smell of nature or simply the sun touching your face.

Who is the person in your family that you share your fears with?  

How do they make you feel at peace?

Practise the skill of Box Breathing.  This is a breathing technique that I teach my own children when they feel a lot of butterflies in their tummy.

Have a go with your family!  We will go over this technique in class!

My thoughts are with you all during this difficult time as we go into Home Learning!  We can do it!  

Hard copy Learning Packs can be picked up from school tomorrow from 10am-1pm.

Packs will be given out in our school Library.

Both gates will be open, please wear a mask and we will have contact tracing in place.

These packs are for our children who did not get one in the last lockdown.  

We need 8 parents from Room 8 to pick up the learning packs please.  I will email and text these 8 parents personally.

Suggested Room 8's learning activities for today
1.  Help broom the floor at home.
2.  Find different leaves and sticks in your garden.  Create an insect with it.  
3.  Ask a big person at home to tell you their favourite Samoan legend.  Listen to it.  Act it out.
4.  Count to 100 and back to 0, skip count in 5's , 10's and 2's.  
5.  Clean up your room and put all your clothes away in the right place.

Nelisa, Malama, Tuilosa and Sala'a all turned up on time to their google meets classroom learning time today.  Salina missed her one because she was not organised.

The younger ones also went to school to help their dad out early in the morning to pack all the chromebooks ready to be picked up by parents today at their school!

The whole family gave Michelle and Salina 8/10.  They made their own pastry from scratch.  Used the leftover curry from last night and used lots of our leftover salad in their little surprise pastries.

Mum's favourite game:  Who can fold up the washing the fastest and the neatest?  Plus put it away!

Ball Game

Malama, Sala'a and Tuilosa have to work together to catch the ball more than 100 times.  Passes can be bounce, lob or chest passes.  Only played after the household games are finished.

Partnership- As part of our Treaty of Waitangi work we talked and acted out the first P from article one of  the Treaty of Waitangi. 

What does it mean to be a good friend?  What does a good friend look like?  Sound like?  How does a good friend make you feel?

Do you think the Pakeha (crown) has been a good friend to the Tangata Whenua ( Maori).

Jeremiah is a gentle friend to everyone!  His mother Sina is a mother, an aunty to all of children in Room 8.  She is a very popular mum!

My name is Sina Lologa.  I was born in Niutao, Tuvalu.  I was adopted at the age of 7years old and went to live in Dunedin with my uncle and his palagi wife.  I grew up in Dunedin, then my family shifted to St Andrews, I completed my last 2 years of High School at Timaru Girls' High School.  I completed my Bachelor of Teaching and Learning Degree at Canterbury University.  

I am married to a Samoan, Sala'a Lologa and we have 7 children.  Tiare (23yrs), Michelle (20yrs), Nelisa- Ailini (16yrs), Salina (12yrs), Malama (10 yrs), Tuilosa (9yrs) and Sala'a- Troy (6yrs).

I love my family and my favourite thing to do is to have fun alongside my children from playing sports to cooking or digging around the garden.

I look forward to serving my Flatbush family with an open heart and to do my very best for your children.
