Writing today we will go over how to write the solution part to our narrative.


Review of our story so far!


The Enormous Talo

Once upon a time there lived an old man and an old lady in a state house in Otara on Flat Bush Road.  Their house was surrounded by a beautiful talo garden.


“What big talo you grow!” admired the old man’s neighbours.


“Thank you, I water my talo every night and put my grass clippings on top of them!’ said the old man. 


The old man worked very hard every day, as his gym is his garden.  His hands are wrinkly filled with dirt.  He wears a hat on his head to keep his head nice and cool.


Every morning his wife would make him a cuppa tea and take it out to him in the garden.


The night before Christmas the old man tried to pull out the talo.  However it was too big.  

“Tug, tug, tug went the old man, I need some help!”  said the old man.



The resolution is where the action takes place in a story.  It is the exciting part of a movie.  You want to move your audience.  Your events in the story must be in logical order so the audience doesn't get confused.  

Let's try writing one together.  We have our plan.  Now let's build up our resolution sentence by sentence.

FIREWORKS SAFETY

During Diwali most people that are celebrating usually light fireworks. Remember you need to know how to be safe around fire works. Watch the video below and try to see if you can write down 4 things you can do to keep you and your whanau safe during Diwali and Guy fawkes.

One of my favourite stories from Tokelau is called ‘The safe place’. Listen to the story and answer the following questions below:

1:  Why do you think the hen couldn't be safe under the coconut tree?

2:  Who lived on Fenuafala?

3:  Where else do you think would be a good place for the hen to lay her eggs? 

4:  Who was she safe from?

5: Where else do you think could be a safe place for the hen?

6: Draw a picture and write a sentence where you think this safe place would be.

Happy Tokelauean Week


Let's watch this doco and write some facts from it.


Let's collect some facts that we know about Olohega

America has so much land.  Tokelau is so tiny.  We need our land back.Return Olohega to its rightful owner.

1856 An American sea captain arrived in Olohega and bought it for 1 bottle of gin and 15 shillings per acre.
1925 Olohega was annexed by USA
Tokelauans lived on Olehega.  They grew extra food on this land for the other islands of Tokelau.
Tupua- Praying Rock
there is one on Olohega and also on the other Tokelauan Islands.





Tokohega Treaty 2 December 1980 a Treaty was signed between NZ and USA that outlined the maritime boundaries of Tokelau and USA waters.  Olohega was now lost.  Tokelau signed its rights of ownership of Olohega.Tokelau felt NZ forced them to sign the treaty.

No one asked the Olohegan to sign.  Only the other islands of Tokelau signed.

Happy Niuean Language Week

Let's see if we can learn how to do the Niuean Takalo!  We are so lucky to have the Gatoloai family make this tutorial video for us.  A dedication to Sean Wainui!







How Niue got its Name

Once upon a time there was a coconutless Island in the Pacific ocean.  The islanders life was very hard.  The land offered a variety of plants but the mighty coconut was nowhere to be found.

"We must head back to our ancestral land of Mano'a in Samoa to get us some coconuts so we can sustain ourselves!"  said the chief to his fellow men.  "  Who is brave enough to make this dangerous trip?"

Every man on the island looked at down, careful not to make eye contact with the chief.

" I am sorry sir, my wife is pregnant and I don't want to miss the birth of my first born!" said Leka.
"Yes... I have very bad gout at this time of the year so I can't go!  said another warrior... "what about...... "

"I will father...I will go!" said the brave Chief's son.  "I know our people can't survive this rock of an island without out the tree of life!

The old Chief smiled at his son and gave him his blessing to sail to their motherland.

The brave young chief headed back to his ancestral home by using the stars to navigate the vast and dangerous Moana.  He arrived safely in Mano'a, Samoa.

"Welcome to Mano'a... my cuz!" Moa the Chief of Mano'a was so honoured to see his relative he was eager to help.

This is one of my ancestors on my home island of Niutao.  It is a gift that is only used on very dry seasons to save the people of Niutao.

This is Tepaaki she is the storyteller of this story, it is her family that holds this knowledge.

Today we are learning about the moon festival. The moon festival is a chinese tradition and this year it starts on Tuesday and usually last for 3-7 days.  We are going to listen to the story and find out what the legend of the moon festival is about. 

See if you can answer some of these questions from the story:

4: Who tried to steal the elixir?

5:Why did Chang'e take the elixir?

Today we learnt how to make paper lanterns. Here is a video clip if you missed out on the lesson. Chris and Jeremiah helped write the instructions below:

How to make a lantern.

Step1: Fold the paper in half, long ways.

Step2: Draw a picture on the paper.

Step 3: Measure some lines and cut from the centre half down to near the end- not right off.

Step 4: Open it up, and tape it together on the side.

Step 5: Put the handle on the top of the lantern.

Story time for today!  My own children have a few fears about being in Lockdown and going back to school.  This is a really good story on how to overcome some of these butterflies in your your tummy!

Practise the skill of Box Breathing.  This is a breathing technique that I teach my own children when they feel a lot of butterflies in their tummy.

My thoughts are with you all during this difficult time as we go into Home Learning!  We can do it!  

Hard copy Learning Packs can be picked up from school tomorrow from 10am-1pm.

Packs will be given out in our school Library.

Both gates will be open, please wear a mask and we will have contact tracing in place.

These packs are for our children who did not get one in the last lockdown.  

We need 8 parents from Room 8 to pick up the learning packs please.  I will email and text these 8 parents personally.



Suggested Room 8's learning activities for today
1.  Help broom the floor at home.
2.  Find different leaves and sticks in your garden.  Create an insect with it.  
3.  Ask a big person at home to tell you their favourite Samoan legend.  Listen to it.  Act it out.

Malama, Sala'a and Tuilosa have to work together to catch the ball more than 100 times.  Passes can be bounce, lob or chest passes.  Only played after the household games are finished.

Week 2

Partnership- As part of our Treaty of Waitangi work we talked and acted out the first P from article one of  the Treaty of Waitangi. 

What does it mean to be a good friend?  What does a good friend look like?  Sound like?  How does a good friend make you feel?

Do you think the Pakeha (crown) has been a good friend to the Tangata Whenua ( Maori).

Thank you to Mama Paese for being an awesome teacher in Room 8!  Mama Paese will be teaching alongside me.  She will be speaking Samoan to our children.  Room 8 is so blessed to have Mama Paese!


Jeremiah is a gentle friend to everyone!  His mother Sina is a mother, an aunty to all of children in Room 8.  She is a very popular mum!

Chris has been the maths champion a few times now!


Tala is a kaitiaki of our our learning equipment.


Ama is so caring, she always comforts those who are a bit sad.

My name is Sina Lologa.  I was born in Niutao, Tuvalu.  I was adopted at the age of 7years old and went to live in Dunedin with my uncle and his palagi wife.  I grew up in Dunedin, then my family shifted to St Andrews, I completed my last 2 years of High School at Timaru Girls' High School.  I completed my Bachelor of Teaching and Learning Degree at Canterbury University.  

I am married to a Samoan, Sala'a Lologa and we have 7 children.  Tiare (23yrs), Michelle (20yrs), Nelisa- Ailini (16yrs), Salina (12yrs), Malama (10 yrs), Tuilosa (9yrs) and Sala'a- Troy (6yrs).

I love my family and my favourite thing to do is to have fun alongside my children from playing sports to cooking or digging around the garden.

I look forward to serving my Flatbush family with an open heart and to do my very best for your children.
